Your First Visit to Garden House

Finding us

We're at 5120 SE 28th Ave, tucked into a courtyard on SE 28th near Reed College, between Holgate and Steele.

You won't see us from the street. That's on purpose — it's why it's so quiet in here — but it does mean the first visit takes a little knowing.

  1. Look for Heretic Coffee's sign on 28th. They share our address, and theirs is the sign you'll spot from the road.
  2. Turn into the parking lot. There are about fourteen spaces. If they're full, there's free street parking on 28th and the surrounding blocks — no permits, no zones, no meters.
  3. Walk into the courtyard. Our A-frame sign is there, and our logo is on the glass door.

When you arrive

Your intake paperwork comes by email before your appointment, so you can fill it out ahead of time if you like.

  1. Let yourself in. No need to knock or wait to be greeted.
  2. Check in at the console just inside the door, using your phone number. That lets your therapist know you've arrived.
  3. Fill out any paperwork you haven't already completed. Five minutes is plenty.
  4. Help yourself to water or tea. There's filtered water, a good selection of tea, and Portlandia canned flat and spring water. Have something before your session or after, whichever you'd rather. The lobby is yours to use.

Getting on the table

Your therapist will talk with you before anything begins: how your body feels, your goals for the session, and anything you'd like avoided, such as injuries, hair extensions, or ticklish feet.

If it's a Swedish-style massage using oil, your therapist will prompt you to get on the table and step out of the room while you undress to your level of comfort. Once you're on the table, it's important to be underneath the sheet and blanket, which together are your drape and keep all sensitive areas covered. We follow the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists guidelines for draping.

For clothed sessions, wear something comfortable in a material that isn't too bulky or slippery, so your therapist can work through or over it and you feel at ease in what you've chosen to wear.

If at any time you need more or less pressure, please feel comfortable saying so. Your massage therapist wants you to be comfortable on the table.

Access

There are no steps into Garden House. A small ramp bridges the original 1920s doorstep. All treatment rooms are on the ground floor and the bathroom is wheelchair accessible.

If there's something you need in order to be comfortable here, tell us and we'll arrange it. That includes working without any scent at all, using a different oil or lotion, adjusting the pace or the lighting, or anything else.

Hours

Open 9am to 8pm, seven days a week.

While we don't accept walk-ins, we do accept same-day appointments when our schedule has availability. If you have a strong preference for a particular LMT, day or time, it can help to book ahead. We love to accommodate same-day appointments, so check our schedule online or give us a call during business hours to see what is available.
